LOW VISION EXAM

A Low Vision Exam specifically focuses on enhancing a patient’s functional vision such as the ability to read, watch TV, walk to the bus, etc.

WHAT IS A LOW VISION EXAM?

  • An exam that caters to your specific visual needs.

    • Coming in with a specific visual goal is beneficial as there are multiple causes for low vision and multiple solutions.  A goal helps us determine where to start.

  • A Low Vision Exam is not an eye health exam.

WHAT DOES A LOW VISION EXAM INCLUDE?

  • A Low Vision Exam is driven by a patient’s specific visual goals.

  • A Low Vision Exam can include:

    • A detailed refraction.

    • A thorough assessment and discussion about your current vision.

    • First hand experience with low vision devices.

    • Specific advice that pertains to your type of vision loss.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING TO YOUR EXAM?

  • Specific visual goals.

  • Items you want to see better, such as books, newspaper, mail.

  • Devices you have already tried (even if they did not work).

HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR EXAM?

  • Be prepared – a Low Vision Exam is long.  Make the appointment at your best time of day.

  • If your last eye health exam was more than 4 months ago, schedule an eye exam first.
